GDC 2023 was an unforgettable experience, filled with groundbreaking announcements, innovative developments, and a palpable buzz surrounding the integration of Web3 and blockchain technologies in the gaming industry. With an impressive turnout and a staggering number of events, it’s clear that the gaming sector is thriving and embracing the potential of web3 technology.
After a whirlwind 5 days in San Francisco last week, we returned home with a stack of notes, hundreds of new connections, and a lot less merch than we arrived with. So, hop on, and let’s dive into the highlights and insights from our exciting week at GDC 2023.
This year’s GDC saw a significant increase in Web3 presence, with 15%-20% of all booths being Web3-related, among numerous panel discussions, and keynotes discussing various blockchain game-related topics.
As traditional game companies become more curious about Web3 technology, Web3 game studios are working to bridge the user gap by launching Web2, freemium games that incorporate optional blockchain elements. This strategy allows players to gradually adapt to Web3 options and capitalize on the benefits of blockchain technology.
Throughout the week, we had the chance to meet up with some of the brightest minds in Web3 gaming, attend numerous events, and form valuable connections with game developers, studios, and industry professionals. From lunch with WolvesDAO to discussing a top-secret opportunity with Unity, to meeting Kongregate game developers, METAPIXEL, Marblex, and many others, to reconnecting with partners and friends such as YGG, Polygon, Immutable, Animoca Brands, and Samsung, to exploring the possibilities of multiverse gaming experiences, to trying out awesome games and exploring potential collaborations and partnerships.
One of the highlights was a side event that we co-organized with BGA. A well-attended Breakfast Networking with BGA, Cronos, D.G Pals, and Venly, featuring a panel discussion on the future of blockchain games. The panel included our CEO, Nick Vale, Ella Qiang from Cronos Chain, Kit Lau from D.G Pals, and Stefan Colins from Venly.
Throughout the week, we shilled NFT rentals, forged connections, shared ideas, and gained insights that will undoubtedly shape the future of Web3 gaming. With every conversation, we were reminded of the passion and innovation that drives our industry forward.
As we look ahead, the next 6 to 18 months will be crucial for the development of Web3 gaming. With numerous games in the pipeline and increasing interest from traditional game companies, Web3 gaming is poised to break new ground. As we continue to explore innovative business models and economies, the potential for Web3 gaming is immense — and we’re just getting started.
GDC 2023 was a thrilling week, filled with optimism, innovation, and anticipation for the future of gaming. As Web3 technology continues to gain traction and reshape the gaming landscape, we’re excited to be at the forefront of this revolution. One step at a time, we’ll unlock the full potential of Web3 gaming and the exciting possibilities it holds for both developers and players alike.
